“Looking ahead to our 2 shows with Mochipet this week in San Diego and Los Angeles, we set up an interview with him and we also included a few of your fan questions. Check out the full interview below and be sure to get your discount pre-sale tickets to the shows in San Diego or Los Angeles today!

Do LaB: Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. Let’s start by having you tell us about your new album and the new live tour.

Mochipet: “The new Live show is an ever expanding project I started working on this year. I basically got tired of doing the Ableton Live / DJ thing that’s become so prevalent today so I started incorporating more instruments, visual projections, and other secret gadgets to my set. With Music as the basis I’m trying more avenues for my creativity. Because it’s a ever changing project, every show / tour will be different. I hope to incorporate the interactive portion into the show later this year which I am very excited about.”

Do LaB: What was your inspiration for the new album? How do you think it fits into your catalog of tunes?

Mochipet: “‘Rawr Means I Love You’ is a series of songs I wrote the past year and a half on tour. It encompasses many genres and styles. It’s almost like a compilation but I spent a good amount of time making sure it was cohesive and not just a bunch of songs lumped together. You can check it out here: http://bit.ly/rawr_out“”

“Do LaB: What is the live show like? We’ve seen some video and photos of the new dinosaur heads and lighting rig.

Mochipet: “For this tour we are doing songs from “Bunnies and Muffins,” “Rawr Means I Love You,” and several new unreleased tunes. We incorporated several different projection mapped shapes and custom visuals for each of the songs. I also have a drummer alone side many instruments I’m playing myself including a Malletkat, Guitar, and Kitara. And yes, of course there is some Godzilla in the mix as always.”

Do LaB: What is the main difference for you as performer from a live show vs a solo show?

Mochipet: “There is a ton more production that goes into the live show then a solo live PA set. I’m am singing and playing a lot of the instruments live so it will be different at every show. It is all original material and there will be no DJing involved.”

Do LaB: How did you link up with Zoogma?

Mochipet: “I first heard about Zoogma when I was on tour opening for STS9 in Oxford Mississippi. Since then, we managed to link up and do a SE tour together earlier this year. Now they are coming to open up for me on their first West Coast Tour. I’m very excited for them.”

Do LaB: What can fans look forward to at our two upcoming shows in San Diego and Los Angeles?

Mochipet: “Lots of Pets.”

“Do LaB: We also asked your fans for some questions. Here they are…

Will asked: “If electronic music didn’t exist, what other outlet would you utilize to affect the masses?”

Mochipet: “I would probably find someway to use my last name ‘Wang.’”

Luis asked: “Where did you get the name Mochipet?”

Mochipet: “From my Grandmother in Taiwan. She use to tell me to make “Mochipet’s” to shut me up.”

Anthony asked: “Where can I get myself a Mochipet Dino Head?”

Mochipet: “I will sell you mine for the right price in Tokyo.”

“We’d like to thank Mochipet for letting us into his world, and we hope you’ll join us in either San Diego or Los Angeles for Mochipet Live, including performances from Zoogma, Osal8 and Air Stegosaurus.

Mochipet on Autonomous Music’s Va-Array Vol. 2

Va-Array Vol 2 (Autonomous Music – Free DL!)

Autonomous Music is the type of projects that should exist in a heap. This organization uses music and performances live from an impressive list of artists as a tool for social change. Art as a hammer that hits the nail of the meanings.

His proposal is specifically political, and if you know even at some of the names of the musicians involved you will see that everything is more than real, that are putting force into a target clear and thus are making an important contribution. The roster is composed by Dj Vadim, Filastine, Quantic, Mochipet, Natasha Kmeto, The Polish Ambassador, Resident Anti-Hero, Octopus Nebula, Ott, Ott & The All-Seeing I, Ill-Esha, Emancipator, Alex B, Anomie Belle, Blietech, Conduits, Cry Wolf, Dr Israel, Etheric Double, Intelepaths, Invisible Allies, Little People, Marley Carroll, Papadosio, Paper Diamond, Paper Tiger, Phutureprimitive, Pnuma Trio, Random Rab, The Great Muandane, The Nadis WarriorsYppah and Unlimited Gravity.

Last November 28 have released their second compilation for so-called free descent “Array Vol 2″, which contains tracks from all of their artists.” As it is logical, because the reason that unites all of these names is not a musical line but an eagerness in common, styles that handles are the most heterogeneous. On this album they may listen to hip hop, house, future step, indie hop, IDM, synth hop, trip hop, dubstep, reggae dub, techno pop and electro. But mysteriously this stylistic explosion runs evenly. The disk draws a journey that will unveil the adventure of track in track.

A very good album with a very good proposal back.”

Mochipet Featured on Cassette Blog

Mochipet Beastie Boys Remix on Oddbloggins

By now, you surely already have heard that Beastie Boy MCA aka Adam Yauch passed away this past Friday, May 4, 2012, after a long battle with cancer.  This would be a pretty shitty beat blog if we didn’t pause for the man with the beard like a billy goat.  The Beasties will go down in history as legends in hip-hop, and, for our purposes, as some of the greatest innovators of the sample game.  Hell, Paul’s Boutique…. TBT Label Series: Daly City Records

By: Alex Alden

Bay Area DJ/Producer, Mochipet, is known for his loud purple dinosaur suit and dance floor bangers. However the musical maestro has long had his finger in the business side of the industry as well, running his own record label, Daly City Records.

The label’s namesake, Daly City, is the oft forgotten neighbor of colorful San Francisco, CA. Mochipet, or David Wang as he is known sans dino suit, grew up there with his dad. Virtually unknown outside of the Bay Area, Mochipet decided to name the label after the town because he considers Daly City as well as Daly City Records to be his home. In an interview with The Brain Trust, he mentioned that, “It’s great to see people from around the world recognize the name ‘Daly City’ even though they don’t know the city. It’s like building something from scratch and re-appropriating something on a personal level.”

As illustrated through his commitment to home, family is important to Mochipet, and he has brought that commitment to lasting relationships to Daly City Records. All of the artists that have released on the label are in some way personally connected to him and he calls the label “a network of good family and friends.” Due to this emphasis on personal relationships over musical genre, Daly City Records avoids classification.

Mochipet relishes in this fact, saying “I wanted it to be personal and not just another label with a ‘niche’ that spits out the same things over and over again. I love all kinds of music and really wanted Daly City to reflect that.” The artists currently releasing on the label are definitely varied. Some of these up and comers include Living Stone, Th’Mole and Sovereign Sect.

Living Stone is based out of Montreal, Canada and creates deep bassy beats tossed with a dose of dubstep. Reno native Th’Mole puts on a full costumed show and dabbles in different genres but always throws in a splash of humor. His track ‘I love Unicorns’ is a catchy homage to Th’Mole’s love of the mythical animal. Sovereign Sect, hailing from Fargo, ND, is a livetronica group who describe their sound as “as unique as it is diverse.”

As with any modern, digitalized label, Daly City is faced with the threat of internet piracy, but Mochipet isn’t worried about it citing the fact that since his artists are smaller, the people who listen to them are more connected to the music and less likely to steal. “…when your audience doesn’t really care what you are doing and just want to listen to that hit song, that’s where piracy problems come in, because you are trying to make money off of someone who doesn’t connect with your artist on a personal level. It’s like selling McDonalds food. They just want it fast and cheap. They don’t care where they get it from. That’s not what we are trying to do. We can give away our music for free and our fans will still donate or come support at shows. They are interested in what we are doing. “

The aim of Daly City records is “to expose people to awesome music they might have never heard.” Bigger names such as eDIT (Glitch Mob) and Daedelus (Ninja Tune) who have become quite well known have released on Daly City but that was before they made it big and helped gain exposure to a larger audience. Mochipet is not interested in signing a major act and is more focused on the music and keeping the label unique. He says,” Why would I want to make another label of something that’s already out there? I think this is what will set us apart in the long run. I think the labels people remember are the ones that have their own character, one’s that have their own personality.”

Very refreshing to see a label sticking to its ideals in the industry.

Mochipet with MC Zulu and Yan Zombie

By Sijay James

Saturday April 21

Undoubtedly one of the most colorful and wild characters, in the electronic music world, David Wang (aka Mochipet) never fails to be an interesting act to catch. Mochipet has an enormous discography, with releases on numerous labels, and collaborations with dozens of performers, producers and MC’s. His label, Daly City Records, currently releases some of most eclectic and genre bending bass music being produced today, including tracks by Nelson’s own Yan Zombie, who will also be playing Saturday’s show. Mochipet is also known to play in a purple dinosaur costume, unleashing mayhem as the “purple crunkasaurus”. His last two shows in Nelson were unforgettable.

Joining Mochipet will be the legendary MC zulu, known for his rapid fire, randomized cadence, and his choice of uncategorizable rhythms as a backdrop. One of the underground’s most in demand ragga and futuristic dancehalls mc’s Zulu has worked extensively with both Mochipet and Yan Zombie this year. Zombie is fresh from having won the Kootenay Music Award for best electronic producer, and has just released his remix of mochipet’s “mochipet is evil” on Daly city records. This show will be a tag team battle royale of giant superheroes, badmon MC’s and genius zombies, all tied together with visuals from Nelson’s mystery visualist, INVISIBLE.
