Taylor Fife’s Top Releases of 2k9: Remixes
January 16th, 2010 | by taylor fife | published in lists, remixes
Considering some of my favorite releases of the year were not studio albums I decided to split my top 10 into two parts: five full-length studio albums and five other releases. Part one is for the others, namely mixtapes, remix albums, and singles remixed. This list is in no way supposed to be comprehensive; rather, it’s just a sampling of some things I thought were particularly entertaining or interesting last year.
5. Mochipet – Godzilla New Year
Mochipet graced us with two amazing full-lengths this year: first Master P on Atari, then Bunnies & Muffins. I found the former particularly bumpin’, especially the song Turbo Thizz Petnation. Godzilla New Year dropped with less fan-fare, but the remixes put out on this non-album single are about as killer and diverse as they get. The Nortec remix was particularly fun, but David Starfire’s remix grabbed me the most.
4. Röyksopp – The Girl and the Robot (Remixes)
It’s hard to go wrong with a baker’s dozen of variations on an already fantastic song from a terrific album. The remixes are mostly long and dark, but still suitable for any dance party. Ocelot’s remix has (as they would say) the energy and fun of trance music, but without the, uh, trance.
3. M.A.N.D.Y. – Get Physical: 7th Anniversary Label Compilation, Pt. 1
A collection of songs from the past few years put out on Get Physical. M.A.N.D.Y.’s own remix of Neverending by Damian Lazarus is, in my opinion, the highlight.
2. Balkan Beat Box – Nu Made (Remixes)
I’d never heard of BBB before I picked up this album and I can’t believe what I was missing. The world group fronted by an ex-member of Gogol Bordello gets the remix treatment of their 2007 album, Nu Med, with fantastic results.
1. Hot Chip – A Bugged Out Mix by Hot Chip
Not Just for 2009, this may be one of my favorite mixes ever. Disc one blasts the techno, house, and disco, while disc two gets soulful with hip-hop, pop, and whatever else they felt like putting in. The build up to Hot Chip’s brand new track, Take It In, is probably my favorite musical moment of the year.
