Interview + MP3: Dragon-Boy Mochipet, performing tomorrow at MAO, tells us just where his microphone has been
CW talked to beat freaker and rising glitch-hop star Mochipet, who plays live Saturday night at MAO Live House. But, before you read the interview, lend an ear to "Master P on Atari," one of the key tracks off of Mochipet's latest album:
CW: For those who haven’t seen you play before, describe your sound using words that do not contain the letter “e”.
Mochipet: Mochi, botan, spicy, pivot, hippy, dirty, 40, chunky, cat, dog, horny, big, corn.
At your gig are you playing off a laptop, or have you got lots of outboard stuff and hardware?
The sounds all come from a microphone attached to the inseam of my crotch. There is a cable that comes out of my umbilical cord that feeds into the mixer. I hope to hold a concert one day like this when I give birth to a new dragon pet.
You were born in Taiwan–are you hearing any good sounds coming out of the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan?
I don’t know any bands from Taiwan except ABC, and they kind of scare me. They are like Chinese New Kids on the Block. I like the Bunun music ‘cause it’s all improvised like jazz. I like the Hakka and the Fujian Hoklo stuff. I think this would sound cool with electronics.
Your new album is called Master P On Atari–are you referring to chopping up big fat rap on crappy old computers?
I think if I had an Atari ST when I was growing up, I could have made Master P on Atari in the 1970s, ‘cause I would have gone ahead in time and captured Master P’s embryo to genetically infuse it with the Atari and battled Snoop Dog in the city of Compton.
