Mochipet joins Antidote for a China tour, hitting Shanghai's Shelter club on Saturday, Aug.15, 2009. Mochipet is a renowned electronic music producer on a world tour. His style is mad eclectic and delightfully hard to define, tongue-in-check and always ahead of the game. We swapped emails with him during a rare week of rest in his California home.
We've been following your music output for years now. We
first heard your "breakcore" music (digital hardcore) and saw your
campaign "Girls Love Breakcore"... Are you sick of breakcore now? What
style would you call your music now?
I am definitely not sick of Breakcore!! I love all kinds of music. To
me there are only 2 kinds, GOOD & BAD. I don't know what you call
my music now. I guess people call it Glitch-Hop, Dubstep, LazerBass,
Future Bass, Blog Bass?? Who knows, it seems there are more genres
coming out then actual music now a days. People love catch phrases and
buzz words. But in the end it's all just music. I made "Girls Love
Breakcore" because of this.
There were people on both sides of the fence yelling at me. Your
Breakcore is not Breakcore!! Your Breakcore not IDM!! Now I'm getting
the same thing with "Master P on Atari" and "Bunnies & Muffins."
This is not Dubstep! This is Lazerbass! I have no idea. I'm always
changing and exploring new music so that's just what
it is I guess.
A lot of your newer productions seem have a tongue-in-cheek mix of pop music, mainstream-ish hip hop, and left-field electro. Do you like the songs you destroy, uh, remix, or are you taking the piss?
If by taking a piss you mean having fun, then yes. I love playing
around with re-appropriations . Taking something and doing a 180 on the
mother. I think it's more fun to push the barriers then stay inside a
safe little circle. Take some chances and you never know what you'll
find. And all the pop and mainstream hip hop needs a little
kick in the ass. Don't you think?
You've got a song, "Dancehall Murderer" on a new CD release from Beijing's Shanshui Records. How did that come about? Are you familiar with any Chinese electronic music producers?
Sulumi from Shanshui asked me to submit some songs over a year back I think. I actually forgot about it until Michael from Antidote mentioned he was doing another compilation. I sent him two tracks to choose from and he picked the "Dancehall Murderer."
I think it's great there are experimental electronic labels in China
releasing music. I am really excited to see what comes out of China in
the next few years music wise. It seems like it's still fresh and
exciting! I'm really looking forward to hearing what the young
musicians come up with. Feel free to send me a demo at "info (at)
dalycityrecords (dot) com."
What do you expect from Chinese audiences, compared to Europe or North America?
I really don't know what to expect honestly. I've played in Japan and Europe and it was amazing so I hope China doesn't let me down. I know they don't have as much of a history with electronic music but I think they will catch on fast. Every one I know has a computer now a days and the music is just an evolution of it.
Looks like there's a sponsorship from AVID and M-Audio, and
you're doing a workshop for them before the Beijing gig (Aug.22 @ MAO
Live House). Have you taught workshops like this before? Give us some
insight for the gear-heads -- what's your favorite new toy to make
music with?
I have done a few workshops actually and I use to teach at San
Francisco State College for New Music so I hope I will do a good job.
I'm going to go into the most popular program right now for making live
electronic music, Ableton Live. Some of my favorite new toys right now
include: Akai APC40, Stanton SCS.3, and The Jazzmutant Lemur.
We have had a lot of development so far but I think we still have a
long way to go. I am actually in the middle of developing my own MIDI
Controller that I am in discussions with several manufactures. I think
the future is bright for this genre.
Daedelus played a packed house here in Shanghai last year.
You've collaborated with him. How did that work, did you get to touch
his Monome?
That's funny you say that cause I was actually was with Alfred (Daedelus) the day he first saw the Monome. It was at a gallery show in Los Angeles. At the time it was just a custom midi controller that Brian had made for his Max/Msp Patch. It was pretty cool. We never saw a controller with so many buttons.
Alfred quickly appropriated it into his live performance; it was
funny because before that he would bring out all this crazy doepfer
analog CV controlled synths linked to drum
machines and stuff, it was nuts. It would take him seriously 2 hours to
setup. The Monome shrunk his system down quite a bit. The rest is
history I guess.
You've been touring like crazy this year, all over Europe, even Missouri. Where do you get the energy for that?
Glutinous rice cakes? I don't know. Last year I did a tour of Europe
and the US (East Coast) that spanned a period of 4 months non-stop. I
was so tired after that I vowed never to do it again. So here I am
again., back on tour. So who knows? My mom says I'm nuts.
You live in Daly City, just south of San Francisco. You named
your record label Daly City Records. What's so great about Daly City,
other than the Invisible Skratch Piklz? Are you in any gangs there?
What do kids do for fun there?
I really don't know what's so great about Daly City. I don't even know
if it's a nice place to live really. I just think it's funny how people
love to rep their cities like there is no tomorrow. I don't even know
why I like Daly City. It's foggy and cold usually and there isn't much
of a night life unless you like to play pool. And they won't let me be
in any gangs cause I'm not Filipino. I guess I like Daly City cause
it's kind of different, like me.
BBC's Marie Anne Hobbs did a feature show on you recently. Does she talk in that soft sexy voice off the air?
Yes, always. even at church. =) JK. It is kind of sexy soft voice
huh? Makes the music seem way more hot than it is. Thank her for that.
That purple dinosaur suit must be quite a babe magnet! Do you only
have one? There are no laundromats in China...
What? how can there be no laundromats in china? That is not
possible. Until just a month ago I had only one dino suit. But recently
there has been another constructed. Now I wrestle with which to wear to
Asia. The old one has all the charm and sweat of my last 3 tours. The
new one is new and improved with pockets! What will I do? Will it be
like Spiderman vs. Venom?
It's cliche to end with a question about food, but you seem
quite obsessed with it. What are you looking forward to eating on your
China tour?
Babies! I heard they sell them for eating now in China. I want mine extra krispy.
This is some freaky shit, is this for real?
